By 1992 Michael Jordan’s achievements, recognition & fame were beyond what most people could have ever predicted. In the short span of 7 seasons in the League, MJ had already been selected to seven All-Star games, named All-Star Game Most Valuable Player, won Rookie of the Year, named Defensive Player of the Year, won two Dunk Contest, was a two-time NBA Most Valuable player, and most importantly, won an NBA Championship while being named the Finals Most Valuable Player in 1991.

The AJ7 has a myriad of significance in the Jordan Brand mythos. By 1991, Tinker Hatfield (Godfather of Sole, “The Architect”, the “T” in “HTM”, shoe design’s G.O.A.T) was experimenting with high performance, leading edge technologies & materials in footwear for the time. Hatfield melded Nike’s “performance first” ethos into amazing creations such as the Nike Huarache line, Air 180 & ACG Mowabb. These models served as a precursor for the Air Jordan 7. Inspired by the Huarache’s capabilities & design language, the AJ7 featured a neoprene inner bootie with die-cut ankle support and a strong emphasis on weight reduction.

Hatfield (Godfather of Sole) did away with the bells & whistles people had become accustomed to on previous Air Jordan models. Gone were the lace locks, visible Air, clear outsoles - the AJ7 was all business. The AJ7 is the first shoe in the Jordan line without any Nike branding whatsoever. The shoe also marks the beginning of a prolific partnership with Bugs Bunny. The “Bourdeaux” colorway which MJ only wore during the 1992 All Star Game, is also heavily featured in the music video for Michael Jackson’s “Jam”.

In game 1 of the 1992 NBA Finals MJ famously knocked down six 3-pointers in the first half - then looked over to Magic Johnson who was commentating the game, and just shrugged as if he had no idea what was going on. The Bulls went on to win their second championship in a row. That summer, MJ solidified himself as an international superstar during the Barcelona Olympics. The Air Jordan 7 “Olympic” worn during The Dream Team’s historic run was seen around the world & became a fan favourite.

In a calendar year: Jordan took home the NBA MVP award, scoring title, a second championship ring, the Finals MVP award, & an Olympic gold medal marking his best year of basketball yet - all while wearing The Air Jordan 7.
