1993’s Air Jordan 8 has a strong case to be considered the pinnacle of the “golden age of sneakers”. While it may not be as lauded as other Jordan retros, the AJ8 embodies MJ’s career & the iconic 90’s perhaps better than any other Air Jordan model. It culminates the end of Jordan’s first era in basketball. It’s the shoe that helped seal the Bull’s first 3-Peat; it’s the last shoe that Jordan wore before his his infamous 2 year retirement, and at the end of the Playoffs in 1993 - it could have very easily become the last shoe in Air Jordan line all together.
Designer Tinker Hatfield (Godfather of Sole, the “T” in “HTM”, shoe designs G.O.A.T) looked to improve on what innovations he had already helped build with the AJ7. The Godfather took cues from Nike’s relatively new & forward-thinking Cross Training line. Models that he played a part in creating like the Air Raid, Air Unlimited & Air Carnivore all featured lock-down support & Hatfield was intent on bringing the best of his accumulated experience to the Air Jordan 8. The Godfather was a firm believer in the strength of Jordan Brand on its own merits - and continued the “Swooshless” non Nike branding design language from the AJ2 & AJ7.
In the 1993 NBA Finals against the Phoenix Suns, Jordan had arguably his most dominant Finals performance ever. In a 6 game stretch, he hit a record 101 field goals - averaging 41 points a night. All while shooting 50.8% from the field & 40% from deep, leading the Bulls to their first 3-Peat ever. Jordan became the first player in history to win three straight NBA Finals MVP’s. All while wearing the Air Jordan 8.
Maybe most poignant of all, is the aftermath of the 1993 Finals. Jordan announced his first retirement from the game of basketball, leaving a notable void in his absence. The 1993 Playoffs & Air Jordan 8 could have very well become the last time the world saw Michael Jordan grace the hardwood.
